So, here’s a little story from an experience I had the other day at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. I had just landed from an international trip and everything was going smoothly—until I encountered a classic case of boomer vs. airport employee.

For those unfamiliar, MSP has this nifty service called Global Entry. It’s designed to make the re-entry process as quick and painless as possible. You basically walk up to a kiosk, the machine takes your picture, and within a couple of seconds, it’s done. No passport checks, no questions, and definitely no need to stop and think about it for more than two seconds. It’s one of those things that feels like it’s from the future. So, I’m cruising through the immigration area, trying to make my way home.
As I’m waiting in line for the kiosks, I notice an airport employee—let’s call her “Staff Lady.” She’s super polite and upbeat, reminding travelers that once their picture is taken, they can just head straight to the line for the agents. She’s making the process smoother with her cheerful demeanor, and it’s clear she’s aiming to help everyone move along. However, there’s one woman who seems to be stuck in her own little world.
This woman, a classic boomer type with her hair perfectly styled and a look of confusion plastered on her face, is standing absolutely still at her kiosk, staring blankly at the screen. The photo has already been taken, and it’s clear from the machine’s message that she’s good to go, but she just doesn’t seem to get it. At this point, Staff Lady approaches her and gently tells her, “Your picture is done; you can go get in the line for the agent.”
You would think this would be a straightforward interaction, right? Nope. The boomer lady gives her this look that’s a strange mix of confusion, amusement, and outright anger. It’s like she’s trying to process what’s happening but is simultaneously offended by the very act of being told what to do. “I know, you don’t have to tell me that,” she retorts sharply, her voice dripping with disdain.
Staff Lady, being the professional she is, remains calm. She replies, “Oh, well, some people don’t realize it’s done and they can go.” You can almost hear an unspoken “but I’m glad you do!” in her tone. But of course, that just fuels the fire. The boomer lady huffs, “Well, I’m not one of those people. You didn’t have to say that to me,” and with that, she shuffles off in a huff to get in line.
As she moves away, I can overhear murmurs from other people waiting in line. A few heads are shaking, and someone whispers, “Wow, why was she so rude to that lady?” It’s a collective moment where everyone seems to agree that the boomer lady’s reaction was way over the top. Honestly, it’s puzzling to see someone get so worked up over a simple, helpful remark.
Before long, everyone seems to be back to normal, but you can’t help but wonder what the woman’s experience was like before she got to the airport. I can only imagine her going home to recount her tale of woe about how a rude airport employee yelled at her during her travels, twisting the scenario into a dramatic narrative that puts her in the victim seat. Meanwhile, the staff lady continues her job, just trying to make the airport experience a little better for everyone.
It’s a testament to how in every public place, there’s bound to be someone who takes offense at the slightest thing, even when the intent is purely to help. It’s a frustrating side of human nature, but it’s certainly entertaining to witness, especially for those of us who just want to get home after a long flight.
