Ice cream makers are usually in a race to invent the next flavor. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams did something different: it spent five years building its own acorn supply chain just to make one fall flavor.

The result is Appalachian Acorn Pie, a limited-edition flavor that launched in October 2026. It is one of 15 standouts in a new roundup of the best new chain ice cream flavors of 2026.

The list was published October 30 by Tasting Table.

Five Years Of Work For One Acorn Pie

Jeni’s built its own acorn supply chain to make the Appalachian Acorn Pie, which took five years of development. Tasting Table’s reviewer loved its warm, autumnal notes.

The reviewer wrote, “It feels like a perfect fall flavor.” That is high praise for a flavor that required so much effort.

Baskin-Robbins Won Fans With Biscoff

Baskin-Robbins launched the Biscoff Crème Brûlée in September as part of a Biscoff Cookie Collection that also included a shake, a sundae and a boxed cake. It is a custard-based ice cream with cookie pieces and caramelized sugar swirls.

Reviewers called it a real winner. One said it tastes like cookie butter but also has that caramelized crème brûlée flavor.

The chain’s Banana Dulce de Leche was March’s flavor of the month, marketed as a take on banoffee pie. A reviewer at The Impulsive Buy gave it 9 out of 10 and praised its natural banana flavor.

Graeter’s Summer Flavors Got Playful

Graeter’s summer bonus flavors included Marrakesh Coffee, which uses cardamom, cinnamon and ginger instead of traditional coffee flavoring. Reviewers loved it despite the heavy ginger note.

Peanut Butter and Clouds paired peanut butter ice cream with marshmallow pieces, resembling a fluffernutter sandwich. A Reddit reviewer gave it 9 out of 10.

Cherry Sparkler was released for America’s 250th birthday. It is wild cherry ice cream mixed with red and blue popping candy.

More Jeni’s Flavors Landed Well

Jeni’s had several hits this year. Queen Charlotte Sponge Cake is a Bridgerton-inspired flavor with a brown sugar and almond buttercream base, raspberry-rose jam and honey sponge cake pieces.

Earl Grey Crème Brûlée, also inspired by Bridgerton, has a salted custard base, Earl Grey tea, burnt sugar candy and bergamot. Tasting Table’s tester was surprised at first but came to appreciate it.

The spring collection brought a Basque Cheesecake with Brambleberry Jam, and a Key Lime Pie flavor made with key lime puree and key lime oil. One reviewer said they were honestly surprised at how much they loved the lime flavor.

Other Standouts From Across The Freezer Case

  • Taco Bell and Salt and Straw teamed up on a Churro Ice Cream Taco: churro-flavored ice cream in a dark-chocolate-coated waffle cone shell topped with puffed rice.
  • Cold Stone Creamery’s Lemon Cake Batter, a limited spring flavor, reminded reviewers of lemon custard.
  • Handel’s Raspberry Sheet Cake has a white cake-flavored base, yellow cake chunks and a raspberry swirl.
  • Dairy Queen’s Biscoff Cookie Blizzard earned a 9 out of 10 from The Impulsive Buy.
  • Salt and Straw’s Jasmine Milk Tea Almond Stracciatella was compared to chocolate chip ice cream, but more refined and aromatic.

How To Pick A Scoop Worth Your Money

Ask for a sample before you commit, especially with unusual flavors. Most scoop shops are happy to give a taste.

Look for flavors with real ingredients you can name, such as fruit, nuts or tea. They tend to taste more distinct than simple sweet flavors.

Share a pint with family so everyone can try a bite, and keep the container tightly sealed in the back of the freezer to prevent ice crystals.

Make Fall Ice Cream Feel Special At Home

You can dress up a plain vanilla pint at home. Warm a few apple slices in butter and cinnamon, spoon them over the top and add crushed cookies for crunch.

A drizzle of caramel and a pinch of sea salt turn a simple bowl into a dessert fit for company. It is a nice way to finish a Sunday supper.

Whether you hunt down a limited flavor or make your own sundae, a cold treat in the middle of autumn is a small pleasure worth enjoying.

Why Limited Flavors Create Such Buzz

Seasonal and limited flavors give ice cream lovers a reason to stop in more often. Each new scoop feels like an event, and fans share photos and reviews online.

That buzz helps chains stand out in a crowded freezer case. A story like Jeni’s five-year acorn project makes a pint feel like something more than a dessert.

It also encourages people to try something outside their usual routine. Someone who always picks vanilla might be tempted by a pie-inspired fall flavor.

Storing And Serving Tips

Ice cream is best when it is slightly softened. Let a hard pint sit on the counter for five to ten minutes before scooping, and dip your scoop in warm water for smooth curls.

Press a piece of parchment paper directly on the surface of an opened pint before putting on the lid. That helps keep crystals from forming.

Serve fall flavors with a warm slice of pie or a spoonful of baked apples. The mix of hot and cold makes the flavors stand out.
