A person walks at night along a city sidewalk with pillars, creating a moody atmosphere.

Imagine you’re out for a late-night walk, hoping to ease your mind and shake off the day’s stresses. For one young man, this was a familiar ritual. At just 20 years old, he had endured a twisted life filled with anxiety. In an attempt to find solace, he often wandered far from home, sometimes losing track of time and distance. On this particular evening, he found himself on a gravel path surrounded by trees, a space he had navigated during the day but had yet to explore under the cover of darkness.

The gravel crunched under his feet as he walked, the familiar path turning eerie in the moonlight. Just as he approached a bench, he noticed an old man standing beside it. The man was oddly dressed—like something out of a horror film. Clad in a windproof vest with a cap pulled low under his hood, he seemed to scrutinize the world around him. Behind him was a baby trailer, cluttered with bags and two plastic bags that flapped in the gentle breeze.

As the young man drew nearer, a prickling sense of unease washed over him. At 6’1″ and a Black man, he was often perceived as threatening in dark settings, but this encounter felt different. The old man’s gaze was intense, watching him approach with an unsettling focus. Feeling the tension in the air, he decided to say something to lighten the mood. “You look scary with all that stuff!” he remarked, cracking a nervous smile. “I was just walking by and it made me kinda nervous.”

The old man replied, “Ha, that’s… that’s my life. There is no danger, at least on my side,” speaking with a serious demeanor while scanning the surroundings as if some unseen threat lurked in the shadows.

The younger man, despite his intrigue, sensed that he should not linger. “Well, have a good evening,” he said with a little wave and continued down the path. But as he walked further, his senses heightened. Suddenly, a dog barked from a dark backyard, causing him to jump. He could feel his heart racing, and he decided to stop on a nearby bench to calm his frayed nerves.

Then he heard it again—the unmistakable sound of the old man’s baby trailer moving behind him, the low “krrrr…” echoing in the stillness of the night. Curiosity mingled with unease as he wondered about the man’s intentions. Did he live nearby? Perhaps he was merely a homeless man seeking shelter, but something about the old man’s presence felt off. Yet the young man hesitated, unsure if he should confront him again or maintain his distance.

As the old man approached, the sound of the wheels stopped for a moment, as if he had paused to recognize him. The young man didn’t want to appear threatening, so he nodded in acknowledgment. The old man’s expression shifted to surprise, and he continued on his way. But then, just a few meters ahead, he abruptly halted. For a moment, he looked around, then glanced back at the young man before rummaging through the contents of his trailer.

The young man felt a surge of anxiety rise within. He was wearing running clothes, and the adrenaline pulsed through his veins. He positioned himself to make a quick escape if necessary, feeling the tension in the air weigh heavy on his shoulders. The old man continued digging through the trailer, finally moving it behind a bush, where it was almost out of sight.

At that moment, clarity broke through the confusion. This wasn’t a movie; he wasn’t about to be the protagonist in a horror story. He turned on his heel and decided to leave the unsettling scene behind. His pulse quickened as he stepped off the path, fully alert to any strange sounds around him, thoughts racing through his mind about the odd old man and his peculiar trailer. It left him questioning everything he had just witnessed. Was this man just another lonely soul, or was there something more sinister at play?

The experience stayed with him, a chilling reminder that even the most ordinary late-night walks could take a turn into the unknown. He realized he would never walk that gravel path alone again. But as he left, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the old man was still watching, hidden in the shadows.
