In a small town, where everyone seemed to know each other, a new mother found herself at the center of a delicate family drama. Her journey into motherhood was filled with joy and sleepless nights, but it was also complicated by the presence of her mother-in-law, who seemed to have no regard for boundaries.

The struggle began soon after the baby was born. The new mom, who we’ll call Sarah, was adjusting to life with her three-month-old son while trying to navigate the complex dynamics of her relationship with her mother-in-law (MIL), Karen. From the get-go, Karen had a habit of just dropping in unannounced, much to Sarah’s dismay. With a clear understanding that they needed at least a ten-minute warning before visitors arrived, it was frustrating when Karen would saunter into their home, completely disregarding their request.
One particular Sunday, Sarah and her husband were bracing themselves for a visit from Karen. They knew she was coming but had no idea what time. To their horror, she strolled in through the back door, waking the baby from his much-needed nap. Instead of a warm “Hello,” Karen plunged right into her obsession, wanting nothing more than to hold and kiss the baby. Sarah felt a surge of anxiety; this was not how she envisioned the visit unfolding.
Fast-forward to the next day, Monday. Sarah thought they had some respite, but not for long. When Karen showed up again, without any prior notice, Sarah was taken aback. This time, Karen called, claiming Sarah’s husband had given her the green light to visit. However, her husband wasn’t even home, and when confronted, he revealed that Karen had lied. This was becoming a pattern, and Sarah couldn’t help but feel cornered.
In addition to the unannounced visits, there was the persistent issue of Karen’s affection for the baby. Initially, Sarah allowed a peck on the back of the head, but that quickly escalated. Karen began kissing the baby’s cheeks, and when Sarah put a stop to that, she “forgot” the boundaries altogether. The last straw came when Karen expressed a desire to “suck his toes.” Sarah was mortified; she couldn’t believe the audacity of that request.
Hand hygiene was another mountain to climb. During the baby’s first hospital visit, Sarah had politely asked Karen to wash her hands before holding him. Karen brushed it off, claiming she had washed them earlier. That attitude was concerning; the baby was less than twelve hours old, and the idea of germs lurking around made Sarah uneasy. As the days passed and the baby grew, Sarah found herself having to remind Karen each time to wash her hands before touching him. It was exhausting and made her feel like the “bad guy” constantly enforcing rules.
As a natural people pleaser, Sarah struggled with how to confront Karen without escalating the situation. Her husband was supportive and had attempted to step in, yet his words seemed to fall on deaf ears. Karen’s dismissive attitude led Sarah to believe that it was time for her to take control of the narrative. Should she send a text? Have a face-to-face conversation? The anxiety of how Karen might react loomed over her.
One day, after yet another uncomfortable encounter where Karen openly disregarded an instruction, Sarah decided enough was enough. She had to find a way to assert her boundaries without compromising her peace. After much contemplation, she settled on a direct approach. She would sit down with Karen and calmly lay out the boundaries that needed to be respected as a new mother. Sarah knew it wouldn’t be easy, but she was determined to reclaim her space.
In her mind, she practiced what she would say: “Karen, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but there are certain things we need to take seriously concerning the baby. I need you to respect the rules we’ve set, including giving us warning before visits and not kissing him.” It felt empowering to finally have a plan, but would Karen even listen?
As the discussion loomed ahead, Sarah felt a mix of apprehension and determination. How would she finally set the stage for her own parenting style while keeping the peace in the family? It was a challenging chapter for Sarah, but she was ready to take the plunge and make herself heard.
