In a bustling college apartment, a roommate dynamic is slowly turning into a ticking time bomb. The narrator shares their experience of living with three other roommates, two of whom are nice, respectful, and generally easy to live with. However, the third roommate—the main character of our story—is a walking headache, and the narrator has reached their breaking point.

This roommate, let’s call her “Rachel,” has taken over the living room as her personal sanctuary. She is constantly doomscrolling TikTok videos at full volume, making speakerphone calls, studying loudly, or playing games without a care in the world. The narrator describes the frustration of trying to cook while Rachel’s voice echoes throughout the apartment, ruining any sense of peace. Even the late-night hours are not spared, as Rachel keeps the bright lights on until 3 AM, giggling and chatting, with sound leaking through the cracks around the narrator’s door.
Perhaps the most frustrating element of all is how Rachel seems to have zero regard for the narrator’s belongings. Initially, the narrator didn’t mind sharing kitchen utensils, but one incident changed everything. After discovering their beloved nonstick pan scratched and damaged, they sent a group text to the other roommates, gently reminding them to avoid using metal utensils. Unfortunately, Rachel’s response was as infuriating as it was clueless. She claimed not to know they even had metal utensils and offered no apology for the damage done. Instead of addressing the problem, she deflected and later texted the narrator, wondering if they “hated her” due to the disappearance of the kitchen items. No acknowledgment of the ruined pan, no offer to replace it—just a personal pity party.
Adding to the absurdity, Rachel then requested that the narrator limit the visits from her own boyfriend. Respecting Rachel’s wishes, the narrator complied, reducing the frequency of visits. However, Rachel wasted no time breaking her own request. Not long after, she brought over her boyfriend for four days straight, turning the apartment into a loud, chaotic scene of bubbling microwaves and raucous laughter at midnight.
Notably, Rachel’s boyfriend isn’t just a loud presence; he also has a history of making racist jokes, some directed at the narrator, who is Chinese, and some at the narrator’s boyfriend, who is Indian. It’s a stark contrast to Rachel’s social media posts about racism, showcasing a dissonance that the narrator finds chilling. The hypocrisy of Rachel’s actions only adds to her irritation factor.
Beyond the noise and the clashes, there’s Rachel’s personality—unfiltered and unapologetically abrasive. She regularly mocks engineers, calling them “stinky,” despite the fact that she has failed Calculus I twice. In another moment of her unapologetic rudeness, she insulted the narrator’s boyfriend directly, calling him “stupid” to his face over an academic discussion. While Rachel complains endlessly about her weight, she refuses to take any steps toward self-improvement, often opting for fast food via Doordash instead of hitting the gym.
An even more bewildering aspect of Rachel is her spending habits. Despite her boyfriend working hard at a blue-collar job and having financial limitations, Rachel has no qualms about splurging his paycheck on luxury items. She shows off bags and shoes that she hardly ever wears, flaunting her purchases to the other roommates while he struggles to make ends meet. There’s a sense of disbelief and frustration in the air as the narrator grapples with the absurdity of it all.
The narrator knows they are stuck in this situation for one more year and often feels on the verge of losing their mind. With each passing day, it becomes increasingly difficult to find solace in their own home as Rachel ramps up her antics. From late-night TikTok binges to childish excuses, the tension between the roommates has reached new heights, and the narrator can only wonder how much longer they can endure.
