It all started when Jess, the roommate, decided to take a spontaneous trip abroad for two weeks. As a part of her preparation, she reached out to her friend, Maddy, and asked if she could crash in her room while she was away. Jess wasn’t charging Maddy rent or expecting any help with bills; she considered it a favor and an opportunity to help a friend out. Naturally, Jess and Maddy were on good terms, and they had even hung out several times, so it seemed like a reasonable arrangement.

However, what Jess didn’t anticipate was how this seemingly simple plan would unfold. This past weekend, Jess was still in Europe, and Maddy decided to take a trip of her own to a nearby city. Before heading out, she casually mentioned to Jess that she would be leaving the apartment empty for a couple of days.
