It all started when Jess, the roommate, decided to take a spontaneous trip abroad for two weeks. As a part of her preparation, she reached out to her friend, Maddy, and asked if she could crash in her room while she was away. Jess wasn’t charging Maddy rent or expecting any help with bills; she considered it a favor and an opportunity to help a friend out. Naturally, Jess and Maddy were on good terms, and they had even hung out several times, so it seemed like a reasonable arrangement.

However, what Jess didn’t anticipate was how this seemingly simple plan would unfold. This past weekend, Jess was still in Europe, and Maddy decided to take a trip of her own to a nearby city. Before heading out, she casually mentioned to Jess that she would be leaving the apartment empty for a couple of days. Jess didn’t think much of it; after all, Maddy was supposed to be staying in her room. But what Jess didn’t know was that Maddy had made plans to allow another friend, whom she referred to as “Tina,” to stay in the apartment while she was away, without asking Jess for her approval.
Meanwhile, Jess had also planned a weekend getaway. She was in a different city when she received a flurry of text messages from her friends back home. When one of them sent her a photo of someone familiar standing in the living room of her apartment, Jess felt a wave of confusion wash over her. It was Tina—an acquaintance of Maddy’s whom Jess had never met before—sitting on the couch with a few bags strewn about. This was a complete surprise to her.
As the messages continued to flow in, Jess’s confusion turned into irritation. She felt her heart rate pick up as she envisioned a stranger wandering freely around her space while both she and Jess were out of town. The thought of someone she didn’t even know having full access to her apartment was unsettling, to say the least. There were plenty of questions swirling in Jess’s mind: Had Maddy even discussed this with her? Did she even realize how uncomfortable this made Jess feel? It felt like an invasion of her space, and she didn’t like it one bit.
Upon returning home, Jess couldn’t shake off the annoyance. She decided to confront Maddy when she got back. She felt justified in her feelings, and it was clear that this situation was not just going to resolve itself. Jess wanted to maintain her boundaries and ensure clear communication in her apartment. As soon as Maddy got back from her trip, Jess brought up the incident, laying out her feelings matter-of-factly.
“Hey, can we talk about Tina?” Jess began. Maddy looked a little confused, so Jess continued, “I understand that you were out of town, but I wasn’t really comfortable with you letting someone else stay in the apartment without letting me know first.” Maddy’s reaction was mixed; she seemed surprised that Jess was upset. “I thought it would be fine! She’s a friend of mine!” Maddy exclaimed, her tone almost defensive. “I didn’t think you’d mind, especially while I was in your room.”
Jess took a breath, trying to keep her cool. “It’s not that I don’t trust you, but I think it’s about respect for our shared space. I would like to be informed about who’s staying in the apartment, especially when it comes to someone I don’t know.”
The conversation didn’t really go anywhere. Maddy seemed to brush it off as a misunderstanding, insisting that it was all innocent and that Jess was overreacting. But Jess couldn’t shake off the feeling that her concerns were dismissed. This particular incident had opened her eyes to a lack of communication and boundaries in their living situation. Jess knew she had to figure out how to navigate this dynamic moving forward.
As she pondered the best way to handle the situation, Jess realized that open dialogue was essential. Whether or not Maddy and Jess would be able to reach a mutual understanding remained to be seen. For now, they were left with an unresolved conflict, and Jess was determined to protect her space, even if it meant having tough conversations in the future.
