In a bustling city where rent prices could make anyone wince, a 19-year-old college student found herself in an unconventional living situation. To save on costs, she had agreed to live with her mother, a decision she initially thought was practical. The setup was simple: they had a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment, and her mother, in a gesture that seemed generous at first, had insisted that her daughter take the bedroom while she made do with the converted living room. However, as the weeks went by, she quickly realized that sharing a living space with her mother came with some unexpected challenges.

Every weekend, without fail, her mother’s girlfriend would come over. Initially, this wasn’t a problem; they would watch movies or have dinner together as a family. But then the dynamics shifted, and those seemingly innocent weekends turned into marathon sessions of what one could only classify as very loud sexual activity. The apartment had paper-thin walls, a fact that had almost become a cruel joke for the young woman. What should have been a peaceful evening often morphed into an embarrassing ordeal of sound.

As the hours dragged on, the daughter found herself stuck in a difficult position—she couldn’t exactly pop her head out of her room and demand some quiet, could she? She was awkwardly trapped by her mother’s uninhibited habits. She mentioned that her mother’s girlfriend wasn’t shy about their activities; they were loud, and the explicit, unfiltered dialogue was a constant reminder of the situation she was in. As the sounds echoed through the walls, the daughter found herself uncertain of what to do. Should she listen? Should she scream? Or should she just stay in her room and pretend everything was completely normal? Spoiler alert: nothing felt normal.

She also found herself managing a bizarre routine whenever this occurred. Typically, her mother and her girlfriend would get started around midnight, and this left her with no other option but to wait. Waiting for hours, often until the early morning hours, just to avoid an awkward encounter on her way to the bathroom. Every time she had to go, it felt like a high-stakes game of chicken—would she risk walking past the living room while they were engrossed in their activities, or would she wait it out? It often led to sleepless nights, and frustration bubbled beneath the surface.

The whole situation compounded each week. On those nights, she’d be lying in bed, headphones in but still unable to drown out the reality of the noises from the other room. Trying to study or prepare for her 8 AM shifts felt futile when she was existing within a soundtrack that would make anyone blush. There were times the sounds were so abrasive that she debated taking a midnight drive just to escape, but where would she go? Her friends who were living in dorms or with actual roommates wouldn’t understand her unique dilemma.

The young college student soon learned that the weekends weren’t just a break from classes; they had become a source of anxiety. They were a combination of anticipation and dread—would her mom’s girlfriend come over tonight? Would the noise start early or last until dawn? As exhaustion set in, she found herself counting down the minutes until she could finally close her eyes, only to wake up in a haze the next morning, scrambling to get ready while secretly wishing for some peace.

So there she was, caught in a love triangle of sorts—her mother, her mother’s girlfriend, and her very own sanity. Every weekend turned into a test of patience, and while she loved her mom, the intimacy of their neighboring bedrooms presented a layer of complexity that was challenging to navigate. How do you even broach the subject with your mom when they’re having some of the loudest sex on the planet, a phrase she would joke about but was deeply rooted in her reality?

It seemed her only option was to endure while living in an age where sharing space with family can sometimes challenge one’s comfort zones in unexpected ways. The young woman managed to hold out hope that one day, the walls would be a little thicker, and her weekends would finally return to what she yearned for—a peaceful living environment.
