When you mix family and living arrangements, the potential for drama can spiral out of control. This is the case for one 19-year-old who finds herself sharing a bathroom—and a whole lot of frustration—with her 17-year-old stepsister. Their living situation began about a year and a half ago when our protagonist and her mom moved in with the girl’s stepsister and her dad. What started as a hopeful family blend quickly turned into an ordeal that has tested everyone’s patience.
Upon moving in, the first task on the agenda was to clean the shared bathroom, and it was nothing short of a disaster zone. The bathroom was cluttered with piles of clothes and random trash, which included some alarming items like used piercing needles. It was clear that cleanliness was not a priority for the stepsister. Fast forward to today, and not much has changed. The 19-year-old constantly finds herself picking up after her stepsister, who seems unfazed by the state of their shared living space.
The bathroom is still a battleground. After spending time cleaning it up—an effort made every week—the 19-year-old finds hair scattered everywhere within hours. It’s on the counter, in the sink, and even in her personal drawers. It doesn’t help her sanity that she also has to deal with the overflowing trash can, which the stepsister never thinks to empty, even when it’s spilling over. “I just can’t enjoy someone else’s used period products all over the floor,” she admits, exasperated.
But the mess in the bathroom isn’t the only issue. Our protagonist has noticed a troubling pattern of theft. One time, she had $100 go missing from her drawer, only to find out later that it was taken by her stepsister. Even after getting caught stealing a larger sum from their dad, the stepsister insisted she hadn’t taken it. But the pieces started to fall together when the 19-year-old discovered $100 in her stepsister’s piggy bank that looked suspiciously like her own missing cash.
Moving on to personal hygiene products, things get even trickier. The protagonist has a routine for purchasing her own essentials, but she discovered that her stepsister has been using her body wash without permission. “I only figured it out when I picked up an old loofah she threw out and caught a whiff of my stuff,” she shares. While she wouldn’t have minded sharing occasionally, the fact that her stepsister has no intention of replenishing her own supplies is infuriating.
Now, food plays a somewhat different role in their living arrangement. Their tastes don’t overlap much, making this aspect somewhat less contentious—at least until recently. The 19-year-old enjoys baking and tries to save her own butter for her creations rather than tapping into the expensive stash her mom’s boyfriend buys. But her stepsister unexpectedly decided to use the butter she had set aside for baking. Despite there being plenty of other butter available, she reached to the back of the fridge to swipe the special stash. “I felt like I had to leave a note,” the protagonist remarks, “so I wrote ‘for BAKING’ all over it before shoving it back.”
Despite the fact that her stepsister doesn’t work and spends most of her time in her room playing video games or on the phone, the 19-year-old feels conflicted. She understands that her stepsister struggles with mental health and has faced personal losses, which makes her hesitant to bring up her concerns. “I don’t want to come off as insensitive,” she explains. Yet, she observes that her stepsister has the energy for some activities—like showering and socializing—while neglecting her responsibilities around the house.
The situation leaves the 19-year-old feeling lost. She thinks about addressing the issue but wonders if it would only escalate tensions or make her life even more challenging. “I’m hoping someone out there can relate or help me figure this out. Am I overreacting?” she asks, and it’s hard not to feel for her in this messy predicament.
