Imagine this: you’re studying abroad in Central America, excited about the adventures that await. You share a room with three other guys, all eager to soak up the experience. But then you learn that living with them isn’t quite the dream you envisioned. For the last ten days, one student has faced a nightly battle against noise, chaos, and sleeplessness—all thanks to his roommates.

Before arriving, he had daydreamed about early mornings spent exploring bustling markets and late evenings filled with laughter and camaraderie. But instead of those late-night bonding moments, he found himself consistently jolted awake around midnight as his roommates stormed in, yelling and flipping on lights. He wasn’t even sure how someone could be that loud at such an hour, but they managed to do it every single night.
It all started on the first night when they arrived late from a group dinner. Excited to share experiences from their day, they burst into the room, loudly recounting tales of their adventures, their voices echoing off the walls. He had tried to roll over and ignore them, but it quickly became evident that this was not a one-off incident. Each night was the same. It was impossible to establish a peaceful routine when they entered like a pack of wild animals, exhibiting no regard for his need for sleep.
With his usual sleep quota of eight hours dwindling down to four or five, he felt the fatigue creeping in. Mornings turned into a blur of groggy stares and half-hearted coffee sips, his body screaming for rest. He began to question whether he had signed up for a study abroad program or a sleep-deprivation experiment.
Last night, he thought he had finally found a solution. He decided to hit the sack early in anticipation of an early bus ride the next day. With a hopeful heart, he nestled into bed by ten, hoping to wake up refreshed. But that peace was short-lived. Just two hours later, one of his roommates walked in, blissfully unaware of the chaos he was about to unleash. Instead of finding his way to bed quietly, he opted to set his iPad up and watch a movie—the kind of movie that required absolutely no headphones.
The sound erupted through the room like a bomb going off. As if that wasn’t enough, the iPad’s screen lit up with every single notification, illuminating the dark room like a strobe light. He tried to convince himself it was just part of the experience, but he found himself wide awake and fuming, staring at the ceiling and willing his roommate to realize his mistake and turn the volume down—or at the very least, put on some headphones.
Yet, that didn’t happen. Instead, the roommate fell asleep, leaving the poor guy trapped in a waking nightmare. He tossed and turned, counting down the minutes until he could escape to the world of only semi-consciousness. But every notification ping and movie line just kept him more awake until, finally, he gave up. He could practically hear the distance between him and some well-deserved sleep stretching further as the hours dragged on. Before he knew it, he was staring at the clock, realizing that morning was just around the corner and he was doomed to face a long day on two hours of sleep.
Now, sitting on that bus with his bleary eyes barely open, he felt completely miserable. The journey ahead promised magnificent views and stunning landscapes, but all he could think about was how he wouldn’t survive without some sleep soon. It was clear that a chat with his roommates was in order. But what do you say to the people you’re supposed to live with for another ten nights? Would it even make a difference?
He needed a strategy, a way to address the noise without sounding confrontational or ruining the budding friendship. As the bus rolled down the bumpy roads, he stewed over how to approach them. Perhaps it would be as simple as asking them to keep the noise down, or maybe suggesting they invest in headphones for movie nights? He’d have to be careful about how he phrased things; after all, he didn’t want to be the buzzkill of their study abroad experience. However, he also couldn’t afford to sacrifice his well-being any longer.
With a deep breath, he prepared for the conversation that was looming just ahead, hoping that it would mark the start of quieter nights and restful sleep. Because after all, who could truly enjoy studying abroad when sleep deprivation loomed like an overshadowing cloud?
