a man sitting on a bench looking at his cell phone

It was just another day in Camden County, one perfectly unremarkable until it veered sharply into the bizarre. The sun hung high in the sky as a young man decided to take a break from the chatter of his family. They were gathered at his cousins’ apartment, but he felt the need for some fresh air. He stepped outside and settled down beneath a tree, a quiet spot that was a comfortable distance away from the bus stop on Broad Acres Drive.

As he relaxed, absentmindedly scrolling through his phone, a white SUV pulled into the apartment property. He glanced up, half-expecting someone to run an errand or drop off a friend. But it was a young Caucasian woman who stepped out of the vehicle, and she began to walk directly toward him. A little unusual, sure, but he thought maybe she was lost or needed directions.

However, as she drew closer, he quickly realized she wasn’t heading for the apartment building, nor did she seem interested in asking for help. Instead, she stopped just a few feet away from him, looking directly at him. A smile crept across her face, and she waved, as if they were old pals. He waved back, slightly bewildered but amused, wondering what this encounter could possibly be about.

She didn’t speak. Instead, she pulled out her phone and began texting. He found himself staring at this odd situation unfold before him. Why had she come over? Did she need something? Was this some sort of weird social experiment? Minutes ticked by, and she remained in her spot, occasionally glancing at him while focused on her phone screen.

After five minutes of this strange stand-off, curiosity got the better of him. “Are you okay?” he called out, half expecting her to explain herself. She looked up, seemingly surprised, and replied with a simple “Yeah.” That was it. Just a solitary word and a lack of follow-up, leaving him even more puzzled about her intentions.

And so, she stood there. Minutes dragged on as he sat and tried to make sense of the situation. Another seven minutes passed, the only sound being the faint rustle of leaves in the wind and the occasional vibrations from her phone. She still didn’t say anything more. No questions, no explanations—just her standing there, texting and stealing glances at him. It felt almost like a performance, but he couldn’t quite grasp the plot.

Then, he felt a strange compulsion to leave the scene. Maybe it was instinct or just the sheer discomfort of the situation, but he decided to get up and walk away. As he took a few steps, he glanced back, a final look at this peculiar woman who had taken possession of his afternoon. To his surprise, she was already making her way back to the SUV. It was as if she had been waiting for him to move first, and the moment he did, she dropped her act and turned around.

He watched as she hopped back into her white SUV, the very same vehicle that had brought her to this curious encounter. In mere moments, she was off, driving away without a backward glance, leaving him with nothing but more questions. What had just happened? Why had she come over, and why did she choose to spend those twelve minutes staring at him and texting in silence?

As he shook off the lingering oddness of the moment, he couldn’t help but think that this was easily the wildest experience he’d had in Camden County. He wondered if anyone else had a similar encounter with a stranger, someone who popped into their life out of nowhere only to create a perplexing moment that lingered long after it ended.

In the end, he found himself both amused and unnerved by the encounter. Who was she, really? And what prompted her peculiar behavior? The questions floated in his mind, unanswered as he returned to the safety of familiar company, all the while replaying the bizarre scene in his head.
