woman making coffee in the kitchen

This story comes from a young woman who goes by a throwaway account to share her experience without revealing her identity. At the time, she was working a closing shift as a barista, and it was an otherwise uneventful night—until it wasn’t.

Being the youngest employee in a coffee shop filled with people over forty, she often found herself alone during late hours. On this particular night, her supervisor was busy in the back room, handling stock records, leaving her to mind the shop alone. It was a slow night, and with no customers in sight, she decided to take a moment for herself, enjoying an iced latte while getting lost in her book.

Suddenly, she felt a shadow looming over her. Looking up, she was greeted by an unexpected sight—a man standing just a few feet away. His entrance had been quiet; she hadn’t heard him at all. He was in his late thirties, with a thin face and sporty attire, and he was staring at her with an intensity that was distinctly unsettling. Trying to shake off her discomfort, she greeted him politely and asked how she could assist.

The man launched into a barrage of questions about her book, as well as a few about the packs of gum they sold. Despite his curious nature, she remained polite and friendly. He ordered a mocha cold brew, a simple request that she quickly processed. However, as she prepared his drink, he leaned over the espresso machine, looking even more intently at her.

“Wait. Do you know how to make coffee?” he asked in a tone that made her skin crawl. Even though cold brew didn’t require any special preparation, she confirmed that she did know how to make coffee, wondering why he seemed so fixated on her. What he said next made her heart race.

“Can… I… watch?” His voice was steady, but the look in his eyes sent chills down her spine. She felt trapped in that moment, standing behind the counter as he circled around to the pickup area, his gaze never wavering from her. To her horror, she caught a glimpse of his phone, which he was discreetly angling to film her. Panic flashed through her, and she felt a rush of urgency to finish the drink.

Just then, her supervisor walked in. The atmosphere shifted as the man’s demeanor changed. Not only did he seem unfazed by the presence of another employee, but he also reacted unexpectedly when her supervisor informed him that his payment had not gone through.

“Oh, okay,” he replied coolly before insisting he needed to “finish watching” before he paid. Her supervisor cast a concerned glance at her before returning to the transaction, and she could feel the weight of the man’s gaze as she handed him the cold brew. His fingers brushed against hers, and she wanted to shrink away, wishing she could disappear entirely.

He swiped his card multiple times, and finally, it went through. But before he left, he muttered something that felt like a dagger to her chest: “Two for you, one for me.” The words echoed in her mind as he slowly turned to leave. Then he added, in a tone that made her stomach drop, “We’ll see you later tonight.”

With that, he took a sip of his coffee, licked his lips as if savoring some private joke, and exited the shop as casually as he’d entered. Her supervisor looked puzzled but they agreed that something about the man had felt off. Rather than sit outside in the dark as she usually did, she decided to wait inside for her Uber, her mind swirling with confusion and anxiety.

Later, when she discussed the incident with friends and family, they brought up various possibilities. Someone suggested he might have been on a video call, but that didn’t make much sense. He hadn’t had headphones or glasses on; he seemed fully engaged in whatever creepy fantasy he had concocted in his mind. One unsettling thought lingered: She had never seen him before, and given the shop’s secluded location, it was odd that a stranger would be there at that hour.

As she recounted the night, she began to wonder if she was overreacting. Maybe it was just a weird guy who didn’t mean any harm. But the way he had stared at her body, the promise of his words, and the way he had lingered in the shop all stuck with her, refusing to let her feel safe.
