three men and woman near wall

Hi Reddit, this is my first time posting, so please forgive me if my formatting is weird. This happened about a long time ago now, but I still think about it and how grateful I am that it went the way it did, so I wanted to share. During my senior year of high school, I hung out with my friend Ellie and her boyfriend Gabe (fake names) a lot throughout the semester. Ellie and I co-directed a school play, and all three of us performed a song for our choir concert.

One night after a rehearsal, I received a rather cryptic message from Gabe that simply said, “Hey, do you think you, your mom, and I could get lunch together soon? It’s important.” Naturally, being someone who tends to overthink everything, this really freaked me out. I called Ellie to see if she had any insight into what was going on. All she said was, “It’s not really something I can talk about… you really, really should meet with him though.” Feeling a growing sense of apprehension, I messaged Gabe back, agreeing to meet a few days later. This was just two weeks after my 18th birthday, and I had no idea what was about to unfold.

When the day arrived, my mom and I met Gabe at a local diner, and after some small talk to ease the tension, my mom finally asked, “Okay, Gabe, what’s this about?” Gabe took a deep breath and launched into what felt like a completely surreal story. He explained how his adoptive dad, a man in his 70s, had been getting involved in some form of Native American voodoo (as Gabe put it) that utilized potions and spells. At this point, I couldn’t shake the sense that things were taking a strange turn.

But then Gabe dropped the real bombshell: “I had a really bad feeling after seeing how my dad was staring at you the other day at a rehearsal. So, I snuck into his room and found a picture under his pillow next to a ‘love potion spell.’ It was two-sided; one side had a picture of you (OP) with the words: ‘I love you.’ The other side was a picture of him (Gabe’s Dad) with the words: ‘You will love me.’

Y’all, I can still recall the feeling in my stomach when I heard that. Both my mom and I sat there, absolutely shellshocked. It wasn’t exactly how I envisioned my senior year turning out. Poor Gabe, clearly uncomfortable with the gravity of what he had just revealed, simply stated, “I needed to tell you because I don’t trust him. I will make sure you are never alone with him.”

And bless him, Gabe kept that promise. From that moment forward, he and Ellie did everything they could to ensure my safety. My mom, too, was fiercely protective, and together they created a bubble around me that I was incredibly grateful for. Every time I saw Gabe’s dad after that, I felt a wave of panic wash over me—it was as if the room would close in, and I couldn’t breathe. I felt trapped in my own anxiety until I finally graduated. Thankfully, after that, I never saw him again.

Looking back, I can’t help but think about how different things could have been had Gabe not stepped up. I can imagine what could have happened if I had ever been alone with that man. It’s a haunting thought, and I’m truly grateful for Gabe, Ellie, and my mom for always watching my back. Life did go on after high school. Gabe and Ellie ended up getting married and having kids, and I’m quietly hoping those little ones never face the shadow of that grandparent. As for me, I’m safe, alive, and well—all thanks to Gabe’s good will and willingness to protect a friend.
