In the late 1970s, America was grappling with an energy crisis that left many citizens frustrated and anxious. Gasoline was scarce, and stations that received deliveries often had long lines that could stretch for hours. In California, the situation was so dire that the state implemented an odd-even rationing system. Drivers with odd-numbered license plates could only purchase gas on odd days, while those with even-numbered plates were restricted to even days. Some gas stations enforced this rule more strictly than others, leading to heightened tensions among motorists.

On one particularly chaotic day, a man named Jake found himself waiting in an incredibly long line at a gas station. He knew that the wait would likely be exhausting, but he was determined to get fuel for his car. As he sat there, he noticed a car pulling in behind him. The driver, a middle-aged woman, lightly tapped his bumper. Jake immediately got out to check for damage, but found none. Just as he was about to return to his vehicle, the woman leaned out her window and shouted, “You rolled back into me!”

Confused and a little rattled by her accusation, Jake shook his head and replied, “I didn’t roll back. There’s no damage, and I didn’t even feel a bump.” He was taken aback by her aggressive demeanor, especially since he had been sitting still in traffic. The woman, however, didn’t seem to accept his words. “Pay attention next time and learn how to drive!” she snapped, her voice dripping with disdain.

As Jake stood there, unsure of how to respond, he suddenly noticed something that changed the entire dynamic of the situation. The woman’s license plate ended with an odd number, and today was an even-numbered day. A lightbulb went off in Jake’s head. He realized that not only was she being rude, but she was also trying to break the rules at a time when everyone was struggling to get fuel.

After what felt like an eternity, Jake finally reached the pumps. The attendant waved him over, and Jake took a moment to gather his thoughts. He turned to the station employee and said, “Hey, could you check the license plate on the car behind me? I think she might be trying to buy gas today and is in violation of the odd-even rule.”

The attendant raised an eyebrow but nodded in agreement. He turned and walked over to the woman’s car, checked her license plate, and then returned with a serious look on his face. “Ma’am, I’m sorry, but you can’t purchase gas today. You’ve got an odd-numbered plate, and today’s an even day.”

Jake couldn’t help but smirk as he watched the realization hit her. Her face flushed with anger and disbelief as she protested, “But I’ve been waiting in line!” The attendant remained firm, explaining that the rules were in place to manage the limited supply of gas and that she would not be permitted to fill up. Ultimately, the woman had to turn her car around and leave the line in frustration.

Feeling a sense of satisfaction, Jake waved at her as she drove off, unsure whether she even noticed him. The thought of her being denied gas after calling him out needlessly made him smile. It was a small act of petty revenge, but it felt good nonetheless. The rest of the day went smoothly for him, as he finally filled his tank and continued on his way, thankful that he didn’t have to deal with her uncalled-for accusations anymore.

In a world that was struggling with so much, it was a small victory, but sometimes that’s all it took to lift one’s spirits. After all, when people are at their worst, it’s always nice to see a bit of karma come back around.
