Walmart shoppers in nearly 30 states are being warned to check their freezers after Kettle Cuisine recalled a batch of Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kits over possible Listeria contamination. The recall notice was posted by the FDA after the manufacturer flagged the problem itself.
Kettle Cuisine, which makes the private-label soup kit exclusively for Walmart, pulled 3,240 packages of the 14-ounce Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit after routine internal testing came back presumptive positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The affected soup carries UPC 194346474004 and a best-by date of August 22, 2026.
The recalled kits shipped to Walmart stores in 29 states between June 30 and July 7, 2026: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia, according to the FDA filing.
No illnesses have been linked to the soup so far, the FDA notice states. Kettle Cuisine announced the recall on August 12, and the agency published it the following day. Newsweek reported that the recall covers nearly 30 states, while Fox Business noted the contamination was caught before it reached consumers in any confirmed cases.
Why Listeria Is a Serious Risk
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness that is especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 and older, and anyone with a weakened immune system. According to the CDC, symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and gastrointestinal issues like nausea and diarrhea. In pregnant women, a Listeria infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or a life-threatening infection in a newborn.
Symptoms can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of months to appear after eating contaminated food, which is why health officials urge anyone who ate the soup and later develops these symptoms to contact a doctor, even weeks later.
What to Do If You Bought It
If you have a Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit with the affected UPC and best-by date in your freezer, do not eat it. The FDA recommends throwing it away or returning it to Walmart for a full refund. Because Listeria can spread to other surfaces, it’s also worth wiping down the freezer shelf, any containers, and utensils that touched the package, then washing your hands thoroughly.
