That means a display centered over central Canada can still be visible from Minnesota, Michigan or Maine without anyone boarding a flight to Norway or Iceland. Solar activity has been running unusually high this cycle, and NOAA’s public forecasting tools are now flagging exactly which nights and which states have a real shot at catching the lights. Fall, it turns out, is one of the better windows on the calendar to actually check.
What the Kp Index Actually Measures
Every NOAA aurora forecast comes back to one number: the planetary Kp index, a 0-to-9 scale that tracks how disturbed Earth’s geomagnetic field is at any given moment, per the agency’s Aurora Dashboard. The higher the number, the farther from the poles the aurora tends to reach.
At a Kp of 5, classified as a G1 “minor” geomagnetic storm, NOAA rates the aurora as moderately active. Push that to Kp 6 or 7, roughly a G2 to G3 storm, and the agency’s own viewing guidance says the aurora “may be seen” from “the northern edge of the United States.” At Kp 8 or 9, the strongest storms NOAA tracks, the lights can appear directly overhead in northern states rather than staying pinned low on the horizon. You don’t need a degree in space physics to use this. You just need to know that once the number crosses 6, it’s worth stepping outside.

Layer that seasonal timing on top of a solar cycle that’s been unusually active, and this fall lines up as a legitimate opportunity, not a marketing hook for an expensive charter flight north.
How to Actually Check Before You Book Anything
NOAA doesn’t just publish long-range odds. It publishes same-night tools anyone can check for free. The Aurora Viewline forecast updates predictions for tonight and tomorrow night specifically, using the agency’s OVATION model to map how far south the aurora’s visible edge is likely to reach, based on the maximum Kp expected between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Central time. There’s also a 30-minute forecast for near-real-time conditions once you’re already outside and looking up, and a broader Aurora Dashboard that pulls the Kp index, solar wind data and viewline predictions into one place.
None of this requires a paid app, a tour operator’s mailing list, or a chartered flight past the Arctic Circle. It requires checking a government website before you head out for the night, and knowing that a forecasted Kp of 6 or higher is your actual cue, wherever you happen to live in the northern half of the country.

States along the northern border, from Washington and Montana through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine, sit closest to the Kp 6-and-up threshold NOAA describes, which means a strong storm during a fall equinox week can put the lights within a weekend road trip instead of a transatlantic flight.
The lights were never actually reserved for people willing to fly to Tromsø. They’re reserved for people willing to check a number before they go outside.
