The card had a picture of two dogs on the front. Inside, a fourth grade classmate had written that she loved being his friend, and at the bottom she added, “P.S. I have a crush on you.” Jack Nader, who posts as @jacknader, says he still has it. “I have to remember my straight era,” he says.
More than ten years after the two of them last spoke, the classmate who wrote that card sent a direct message to his private account. In a video posted on September 2, 2026, captioned “GRWM FOR DINNER WITH MY EX GIRLFRIEND??!”, he does his makeup and explains how he ended up saying yes.
“I have had one girlfriend in my entire life,” he says. “I have not talked to her in over 10 years.” When her name appeared in his messages, “my heart dropped.” He opened it and found a dinner invitation, which he paraphrases: “Hey, I know it’s been a while, I’m back in town, and I would love to catch up.”
He says he does not know what made her send it, “and I especially don’t know what possessed me to say yes.” His stated reason: “We’re doing it for the plot.” There is one loose end going in: “We never actually broke up. We just completely stopped talking. So I have no idea how she feels.”
The backstory starts at a Catholic school, where he says he was “trying to remain hidden.” He and the girl were best friends. In the last days of the school year she slipped him the card, and he waited until he got home to open it.
He says he did not fully understand what a crush meant, only that the boys in his class talked about it a lot, and he decided to go along with it. In his telling, everybody already “kind of knew that I was a little bit fruity. Except for her, apparently,” and a girlfriend was “a good cover.” The next day at school he told her he had a crush on her too. “From that moment on, we were dating.”
He is specific about what dating meant in fourth grade: “We held hands in the hallway, hung up our coats next to each other in the coat room.” The coat room is also where, by his account, he caught lice from her, when they moved from her coat to his and then into his hair.
Then the year ended and he learned she was moving to a different state. They had planned one real date, a trip to Six Flags after the last day of school. It never happened. “I never heard from her again,” he says, and he still has “no idea” whether she had caught on or did not want to take “the baggage” to her new school.
The other unknown is what she expects to see. The account she messaged is one he has not posted on in years, and he has never posted makeup there. “I really don’t even know if she has any idea I’m gonna show up like this,” he says. He breaks off to finish his makeup, returns to say the glam is done and that he is “very nervous,” and signs off. The video ends before the dinner.
Borrowing Her Message, and His Homework, for Your Own Catch Up Dinner
Her message did three things in one line: it admitted the gap (“I know it’s been a while”), gave a reason for writing now (“I’m back in town”) and made one clear ask (“I would love to catch up”). It got a yes from someone whose heart dropped at the sight of her name.
Check which account you are writing to. She reached a profile he had left untouched for years, so her picture of him stopped where his posts did. If you are the one being invited and would prefer not to spend the first minutes of dinner on the surprise, reply from your current account, or send a recent photo, before the day.
Bring the object if you kept one. He has the card with the two dogs, and putting it on the table gives both people something to laugh about before anything harder comes up.
Decide in advance on the one question you want answered. His is why he never heard from her after the last day of school, with the Six Flags date still planned. Ask it early and plainly so the rest of the meal is not spent circling it.
