Buckle up, because this is a long one. The saga spans a few years, but it’s worth telling. Back in 2015, a 25-year-old guy (let’s call him Mark) was swiping through dating apps when he matched with a 28-year-old woman named Ash. They clicked right away, enjoying good chemistry that quickly turned physical. Everything seemed rosy until one fateful night after an outing to a strip club. After a passionate encounter in his car, Mark dropped Ash off at home, only to receive a chilling message shortly after. Somewhere in the mix of flirty sexts, Ash teased him with the idea of being with someone else. When Mark played along, expecting a sexy hypothetical, he was blindsided by a nude that wasn’t from him. The reality hit hard: Ash was with her roommate’s boyfriend.

Devastated, Mark felt physically sick. He was furious, and yet, despite that gut-wrenching betrayal, he forgave her too easily. Shortly thereafter, Ash moved out of her apartment and back in with her mom. For a brief moment, things seemed to settle down. Then Ash expressed a desire to get sober, and Mark stepped up as a supportive partner, attending recovery meetings with her and providing the space she needed. They enjoyed a good stretch together, but the underlying issues loomed large.

When Mark finally wanted to introduce Ash to his family, she ghosted him just hours before the dinner. A few anxious days passed before he learned that Ash had relapsed and even attempted to overdose. Understanding and empathetic, Mark took it in stride as she broke up with him via text. They danced in and out of each other’s lives for the next year, moving from heartache to reconciliation and back again in an exhausting cycle. Eventually, Mark decided he had enough and ended things for good.

After a tumultuous breakup, Mark went through an emotional rollercoaster. A year of sadness was followed by a healthy relationship, which then morphed into a phase of casual encounters. It was during this “slutty period” around 2018 that Mark found himself on the opposite side of the country from Ash, feeling safe enough to reach out. They began exchanging letters, a pleasant way to reconnect. Ash claimed she was single and had been celibate. However, every mention of her ex, Harlow, lingered in the background of their conversations.

As time passed, Mark returned home, and eventually, he and Ash met up again, reigniting old feelings. After a whirlwind reunion in 2019, they officially got back together despite the distance between them. Initially, things seemed great; Ash even talked about moving in together. But old patterns reappeared, and Ash’s intermittent disappearances became a painful reminder of the relationship’s instability.

When COVID lockdowns began, everything pivoted into chaos. Mark’s mental health took a hit as he spiraled during Ash’s absences, compounded by cryptic social media behavior and an apparent reluctance to be friends on Facebook despite their romantic connection. Just when they began discussing a future together, Ash announced she got into a Ph.D. program, extending their long-distance relationship for what felt like an eternity. Mark learned that Harlow had also moved to the same town where Ash was attending school, raising further red flags.

2021 rolled around, and with vaccinations came the chance for visits again, albeit brief ones. As Mark barely processed the news that Ash’s program would take longer than expected, he met someone new at the local karaoke bar, Catherine. As Mark spent more time with her, he began to see how poorly Ash had treated him. This clarity led Mark to finally end things with Ash once and for all, writing her a detailed breakup message that she left on read.

The following months were an emotional blur of heartache, but Mark stumbled across a shocking revelation: Ash had been hiding the truth about her marital status. A Facebook post revealed that Ash was, in fact, still married to Harlow and that he had been the one accepted into the Ph.D. program. Mark’s world spiraled as he absorbed this betrayal, but instead of wallowing indefinitely, he found a light-hearted avenue for revenge that involved his library card.

Having given Ash access to his library account, Mark decided to get petty. He monitored her book checkouts and waits a few days before returning the book she was reading and canceling all her other holds—except for one: a book about saving marriages from infidelity. He added various titles that pointedly called out her deceit without saying a word. Ash’s reaction was palpable as she updated her social media bio to reflect her newfound self-awareness. Mark never heard from her again, and he found solace in his new relationship and his own growth.

In hindsight, he realized he was finally in a better place in life, feeling lighter without Ash’s baggage. Every so often, the memories would remind him of the ordeal, but it was a comforting reminder of how far he’d come.
